Material & Applications

Why SS 316 Disc Chemical: The CF8M (SS 316) disc provides corrosion resistance against acids, alkalis, chlorides, and most industrial chemicals. The cast iron body is protected from the fluid by the elastomer liner and only contacts the fluid at the shaft penetration points. This means SS disc + CI body is a cost-effective combination that provides chemical resistance where it matters (at the disc/fluid interface) without the expense of a full stainless steel body.

Typical applications: Chemical dosing systems, acid and alkali service, process water with chemical additives, wastewater treatment, mining slurry (with appropriate liner), pharmaceutical water systems, and any application where the disc must resist chemical attack.

SS 316 Disc Chemical Butterfly Valve FAQs

Why SS disc with cast iron body?
The disc is in constant contact with the process fluid and experiences the highest corrosion stress. The body is protected by the elastomer liner and only contacts fluid minimally at the shaft bearings. SS disc + CI body provides 90% of the corrosion protection of a full SS valve at roughly 40% of the cost. For highly aggressive fluids that attack the body even through liner degradation, a full SS body may be warranted.
Which liner for acid service?
FKM (Viton) is the standard choice for most mineral acids (sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric) and organic acids at moderate concentrations. For concentrated sulphuric acid above 98%, special materials may be needed. For hydrofluoric acid, no elastomer is fully resistant.
