Material & Applications

Why Stainless Steel F304/F316: F304/F316 stainless steel provides corrosion resistance at extreme pressures. F316 is preferred for chloride and marine environments. F304L/F316L are specified for welded systems where sensitization must be avoided. Note that F304L/F316L have lower pressure ratings and temperature limits than standard F304/F316.

Typical applications: High-pressure chemical injection, reactor feed, supercritical fluid systems, offshore/marine HP piping, pharmaceutical high-pressure processes, and any extreme-pressure application requiring corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel F304/F316 Globe Valve FAQs

What is the maximum pressure for F316 Class 4500?
745 bar (10,800 psi) at ambient temperature. At 316°C, it drops to 467 bar. At 538°C, 376 bar. At the maximum temperature of 816°C, only 43 bar. These are still substantial pressures, making F316 Class 4500 suitable for extreme-duty chemical and process applications.
Are F304L/F316L available in Class 4500?
Yes. F304L and F316L are available in Class 4500 with a maximum pressure of 621 bar (9000 psi) at ambient. However, their temperature limit is 450°C (850°F), compared to 816°C for standard F304/F316. Use L grades only when weld sensitization is a concern and temperatures stay below 450°C.
What stem material is used at high temperatures?
For standard F304/F316 valves, the stem is A182 F304 or F316 matching the body. For high-temperature service, KSB uses A479 XM19 (Nitronic 50) stem material which offers higher strength and galling resistance at elevated temperatures.
