Material & Applications

Why Multi-Material Globe: Available in virtually any material to match the process fluid — from standard carbon steel for utility service to exotic alloys for aggressive chemicals. The cage guided design centers the plug for precise positioning, allows easy trim changes to modify valve characteristics (equal %, linear, quick opening), and enables balanced plug design that reduces the actuator force needed to move the plug against process pressure.

Typical applications: Flow regulation in power plants (BFP recirculation, HP heater drain, steam temperature control), refineries (column feed, reflux, pressure letdown), chemical plants (reactor feed, product blending), oil & gas (separator level, compressor recycle). The MIL 41000 covers the widest range of process control applications.

Multi-Material Globe Control Valve FAQs

What is cage guided vs stem guided?
Cage guided: the plug is guided by a cage (cylindrical sleeve with shaped flow ports). This provides precise centering, prevents plug vibration, allows easy trim replacement (just change the cage to change flow characteristic), and enables balanced plug design. Stem guided: plug guided only by the stem bushing. Less precise, more prone to vibration, and trim changes require complete valve disassembly. Cage guided is the modern industry standard for process control valves.
What is a balanced plug?
A balanced plug has pressure equalization holes or channels that reduce the net force acting on the plug from process pressure. This allows smaller, less expensive actuators to operate the valve. Without balancing, the actuator must overcome the full process pressure acting on the plug area, requiring oversized actuators especially at high pressures.
Single seated vs double seated?
Single seated: one plug and one seat. Provides Class V (near-zero) shutoff. Standard for most applications. Double seated: two plugs and two seats. Provides pressure balancing but only Class III shutoff (higher leakage). Used in large sizes where actuator force for single seated would be excessive, and where tight shutoff is not critical.
What actuator types?
Pneumatic diaphragm (most common, fail-safe), pneumatic piston (for high thrust), electric (for remote locations without air supply). Smart positioners (MIL 8013) provide 4-20 mA interface with DCS/PLC.
